Services Pain Management Specialty Team
Norwell VNA and Hospice uses an interdisciplinary team approach to managing patients with acute, chronic, or non-curable pain. Each patient is given a pain-management assessment, which identifies the type and source of pain and includes recommendations for the best treatment. The entire team of professionals may get involved in the assessment, including physical therapists, nurses, social workers, physicians, family members, and sometimes spiritual counselors.
The treatments may include physical therapy, drug and non-drug therapies such as acupuncture or massage, and spiritual counseling, among others. Norwell VNA and Hospice makes the referrals for all levels of treatment to the appropriate professional.

Norwell VNA and Hospice Basic Concepts of Pain Management
- The patient is the authority on his/her own pain.
- The patient has the right to expect a rapid and effective response to a complaint of pain.
- A history of the patient’s pain is very helpful. Details of the pain’s location, duration, radiation, and character often provide valuable clues about how to treat the pain most effectively.
- A balanced approach to pain management combines medication and non-medication techniques, which include relaxation, positioning, and various modalities.
